QUEBEC TERCENTENARY

20¢ Brown Re-entries

July 16, 1908

This stamp has long been known for its major re-entry, showing sharply in 1908. However, there are also a few minor re-entries that are often mistaken for the major, as doubling of the right verticle frameline can be seen. Retouches of the right frameline are also found.

Note that earlier cataloguers placed this re-entry in position 21 on the single plate sheet of 100. It has been since discovered to actually be in position 41, by examination of the proof in Ottawa.

The Major Re-entry

Plate Position #41

The Major Re-entry on this issue has been known and listed in catalogues for years. The fact that another much more minor re-entry exists on this stamp is not so well-known. (See #2 below)

The Major is one of the sharpest re-entries of the series, with almost the entire right side shifted to the right. Note the '1908', the '20' and its surrounding floral patterns, and the vertical right design. The inner frame around the ships is also doubled.

I have added a scan of a strip of three with the major in the centre. The major is NH, but as you can see, the centering is not great.

Cartier’s Arrival 1535

Re-entry

There are several minor re-entries on this stamp, but they have been overshadowed by the strength of the major. Indeed, these are so unknown, I have seen them offered as the major. The entire right edge is doubled, including the framelines, the floral elements around the '20,' as well as the floral design at the lower right.

Note the retouches visible in the right frameline, as well.
