Hawaii  Scott #75 1894

2¢ Brown Re-entries

The 2¢ brown ‘View of Honolulu’ Scott #75 of 1894 is rife with marvelous re-entries. So many, in fact, that there is a book just on the re-entries of this stamp. I finally found a copy of this book and have used it to plate the items below.

Plating Hawaii's 1894-99 Two Cent Stamp, by Albert J. Schwalm, published by Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Stamp Club, Houston, 1973 (Reprinted in 1996) .

This stamp was printed in sheets of 200, four panes of 50 (5 X 10) arranged in upper left, upper right, lower left & lower right panes. There are two recognized states of each pane. The varieties on each are covered individually in Schwalm’s book.

Almost all of the re-entries I have seen on this stamp are quite major in appearance, suggesting that perhaps the transfer roll was carelessly placed on the plate while preparing to move it into its proper position. Indeed, most of the re-entries occur only in a small area, yet the shift is significant enough that many of them can even be called misplaced entries. New! It is suggested in Schwalm’s book that the steel plate used for this stamp was thicker than normal and that the siderographer may have had trouble raising and lowering the transfer roll, thereby placing or dropping it on the plate, resulting in the many misplaced entries. Interesting!
